Donnchadh Ó Riordáin R.I.P.
Donnchada who hailed from Dromahane, Cork, graduated from Bolton St., College of Technology and taught in Rathdowney and Portlaoise before being appointed Principal of the newly established St. Aengus Vocational School in Mountrath when it first opened its doors in 1969 and where he laboured until his retirement in 1988.
Donnchada had a deep social conscience, and was heavily involved in many aspects of life in Mountrath over the many years he lived among us. He was Secretay of Mountrath Development Association, member of the local Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Society. member of Slieve Bloom GAA. He prepared the Mountrath Community Notes for the Leinster Express Newspaper for a number of years. He loved music and was an accomplished musician and singer, was very artistic, his medium being bog oak and bog yew. Many a mantle piece and home is graced with fine examples of his intricate and painstaking creations – one very notable piece even found its way to Áras an Uachtaráin during the time of Mary Robinson’s presidency. The fine piece in the sanctuary area of St. Edmund’s Church in Castletown is but one example of his beautiful artistic creations.

Donnchada, your life and many gifts certainly enriched our lives here in Mountrath.
